Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia U.Enkhtuvshin held a meeting with United Nation’s Development Programme Administrator Achim Steiner on July 18, where they exchanged views on cooperation.

UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner expressed gratitude that Mongolia is actively working towards implementing ‘UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030’ and invited him to attend the side event on the theme of ‘Nature for Life: Accelerating SDG Progress by Investing in People and Planet' and share Mongolia’s experiences.

Deputy PM U.Enkhtuvshin noted that although Mongolia has rich natural resources and laws that supports democracy and market economy, and is located close to the world largest economies which can be leverage to implement the SDG 2030, Mongolia is not using the full range of opportunities, so Mongolia is facing many challenges such as poverty, unemployment, environmental degradation, air pollution, urban and rural gap, and migration. Mongolia was paying big attention to mining sector over the past years, but now it strives to diversify its economy.

"As Mongolia has a vast territory and a small population, the country is being severely affected by climate change. Therefore, we consider that with public effort, the environmental protection can be achieved. Not only  the government but also all citizens are responsible for protecting environment and should engage in  protection. As for the Mongolian government, all the Ministers are obliged to protect environment and measures taken towards protecting environment will be considered when the government evaluates the Ministers’ performances. Natural resources are limited so we are implementing a policy to use it effectively," highlighted Deputy PM U.Enkhtuvshin.
