Scholars discussing technological advance use in combating desertification

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ With aims to combat desertification and to use scientific achievements, innovations and technological advances in this direction, an international scientific conference titled ‘Opportunities and Challenges: Development and Conservation in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions’ began today in Ulaanbaatar city.

Dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Mongolian Foundation for Science and Technology, the conference is being attended by 160 scholars and scientists from Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Hong Kong, Taiwan  and Canada. The conference will wrap up on August 15.

“The Government approved state policy on science and technology in 2017. Through the policy, legal environment was defined to realize environment friendly projects as well as to develop knowledge-based economy.  Attendees of the conference are discussing global climate change and environmental pollution caused by illegal activities of the people. Regarding Mongolia, pastureland degradation is intensifying and soil pollution has become a pressing issue,” said B.Bat-Erdene, Director of Scientific and Technological Policy Department of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Sports.   

Director of Forage Laboratory of Research Institute of Animal Husbandry D.Bolormaa stressed that it is crucial to use natural resources properly and to restore it. "Moreover, we should pay attention on growing edible plant species for livestock as they are diminishing. Scholars and scientists of different countries are presenting their studies and research works on using natural resource and ecosystem appropriately. The conference is significant to broaden foreign relations of our sector."

Kwon Andrei, Professor of the Chinese Culture University made a presentation on his research on climate change and desertification in Taiwan. " We are experiencing many issues related to drought in Taiwan. This is deemed to be related to climate change caused by population growth. I want to learn experiences of other countries," he said.
