Retirement ceremony of 70th Yokozuna D.Byambadorj takes place

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. The retirement ceremony of the 70th Yokozuna Harumafuji D.Byambadorj took place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena of Tokyo yesterday on September 30, 2018.


Harumafuji D.Byambadorj started sumo wrestling at the age of 16 in 2001 and got promoted to the top Makuuchi division in November, 2004. He won 9 championships in the top division. At the age of 28, he attained the Yokozuna (Grand Champion) rank by winning 2 championships in a row in July and September of 2012 and became the 70th Yokozuna.

Former sumo wrestler, the 68th Yokozuna Asashoryu D.Dagvadorj attended the retirement ceremony. Harumafuji D.Byambadorj performed his very last “Yokozuna dohyō-iri” ceremony with the company of the 69th Yokozuna Hakuho M.Davaajargal and the 71th Yokozuna Kakuryu M.Anand. The topknot cutting ceremony began afterwards.


Harumafuji is the 5th non-Japanese wrestler and the 3rd Mongolian wrestler to attain the Yokozuna status. Since his announcement of retirement, he has made investments in the education sector. He also has talent in art and has had his own exhibition open in Japan.
