Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Co-organized by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), presentations on sources of polluting substances and testing on methods of measurement are taking place until October 26.

In the framework of this event, a seminar on the importance of establishing the National Pollutant Release and Transfer Register was organized by the UNITAR for entities. Pollutant Release and Transfer Register is a publicly accessible database or inventory of chemicals or pollutants released to air, water and soil and transferred off-site for treatment. It brings together information about which chemicals are being released, where, how much and by whom.

Head of Green Development Policy Department at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism T.Bulgan gave opening remarks at the seminar, “It can be considered that we have taken our first step towards establishing the National Pollutant Release and Transfer Register. There are several countries in Europe and Asia, such as China and Japan, that have already set up the register. Our team is currently testing various methods of measuring pollution. A total of over 100 substances are considered as common pollutants and it’s the duty of companies to inform, if they release pollutants. Afterwards, the companies have to calculate its environmental effect and take measures in eliminating the negative effects. Therefore, doing the pollutant calculation experiment at the factory means they are fulfilling their duty and ensuring readiness for the the register.”

Within the pilot project of establishing the National Pollutant Release and Transfer Register, data is being collected from entities, such as the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant, Thermal Power Plant 4, MCS Coca Cola LLC, APU Company and Monos LLC.
