Ulaanbaatar becomes first Asian city to join EBRD Green Cities programme

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Ulaanbaatar city has joined the Green Cities programme, which applies the Green Economy Transition (GET) approach. To fully implement the project, the city must first work on its Green City Action Plan (GCAP). The opening of the project, which is being supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), took place today.
Programme Coordinator B.Munkhsoyol said, “In the frameworks of the project, we will work on the GCAP for starters. This includes all the issues that our city is facing today, such as waste, water and soil contamination, constructions and buildings, land and air pollution. We are currently gathering data and indicators related to the issues of the sectors.”
She then highlighted that they will first be determining the amount of funding, and what new technology and investment are needed to solve the current issues.
Deputy Mayor of UIaanbaatar in charge of Green Development and Air Pollution J.Batbayasgalan said, “The project’s main goal is to define what investment is needed to have green development without damaging the environment. In other words, it will put the spotlight on what else needs investment other than the quality of water and air pollution.”
The Green Cities programme is currently being implemented in 10 cities worldwide.
Head of Mongolia Unit at the EBRD Mrs. Irina Kravchenko and specialist experts of Green Cities programme from London attended the opening of the project.
