800th anniversary of Karakorum city to be marked next year

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. On December 4, Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO reported that Mongolia and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization will jointly celebrate the 800th anniversary of the establishment of the ancient Mongolian city of Karakorum. 


UNESCO participates since 1952 in the commemorations of historic events and in the anniversaries of eminent personalities celebrated by Member States and Associate Members, in order to give them worldwide significance. 


Through its program of celebration of anniversaries, the UNESCO contributes to celebrate and draw attention to personalities, works or events that have contributed to the mutual enrichment of cultures and helps to promote international understanding, closer relations among peoples and peace. 


Year of 2020 will celebrate the 800th anniversary of the establishment of the city of Karakorum (Kharkhorin) capital of the Mongol Empire between 1235 and 1260. A proposal had been submitted to the UNESCO for the celebration of jubilee with which UNESCO could be associated. The proposal was supported and approved by the UNESCO during the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference organized between 12-27 November. 


Mongolian Minister of Education and Culture Yo.Baatarbileg took part in the conference, inviting leaders of the UNESCO to the celebratory events in Mongolia in 2020.
