Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. On June 7, Member of the State Great Khural and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Security and Foreign Policy B.Battumur met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkey to Mongolia Zafer Ateş.

Standing Committee Chair B.Battumur said that our two countries are geographically remote but have centuries-old historical and cultural ties. In this sense, Mongolia defines the Republic of Turkey as its ‘third neighbor’ in its foreign policy and attaches great importance to expanding bilateral relations and cooperation. At the meeting, he noted with satisfaction that the relations between the two countries have reached the level of ‘Comprehensive Partnership’ and are actively developing in many fields, including politics, economy, defense, culture, and education.

He said he was pleased that the 9th meeting of the Mongolia-Turkey Joint Economic and Trade Committee, held in Ankara in November last year, agreed to intensify bilateral relations in all areas, which had slowed down due to the pandemic. He also noted that the trade turnover between Mongolia and Turkey has been increasing in recent years, and the number of Mongolian citizens traveling to Turkey and importing and selling Turkish goods has increased dramatically. He stressed that the direct flights of the two countries' aviation companies play an important role in expanding bilateral trade and tourism.

For his part, Ambassador Zafer Ateş thanked the Chairman of the Standing Committee for taking the time to meet with him and stressed that our two countries have deep historical ties, common heritage, and traditions. He noted that cooperation between the two countries is expanding in all areas, and is pleased that the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided and bilateral visits have resumed. He also expressed interest in enriching bilateral trade and cooperation with economic content and further developing cooperation. The Ambassador stressed the importance of developing air and road transport cooperation between Turkey and Mongolia in order to achieve the abovementioned results.

“Currently, the Istanbul-Ulaanbaatar-Istanbul flight operates three times a week, but it is possible to increase it to seven times a week. We are confident that the increase in the frequency of flights will lead to the development of tourism and economic cooperation”, he added.

The two sides also exchanged views on cooperation in tourism, education, culture, renewable energy, and inter-parliamentary cooperation.
