Art & Culture
Ulaanbaatar, December 17, 2025 /MONTSAME/. A special exhibition titled “Traditional Mongolian Clothing and Adornments” opened on December 12, 2025, at the National Museum of Mongolia.
The
exhibition aims to showcase the historical development, evolution, and
transformation of Mongolian clothing and adornments. It features a curated selection
of more than 100 artifacts from the museum’s collection, including items of
clothing, jewelry, and related objects, accompanied by scholarly texts, concise
descriptions, illustrations, and photographs.
Among
the earliest exhibits are a Neolithic-era bead, a Stone Age necklace made from
ostrich eggshell, and an ornament crafted from wild boar tusks. The exhibition
also presents valuable artifacts that embody Mongolia’s rich cultural heritage,
including the “golden tsog” ornament
of a bogtag
headdress worn by Mongolian noblewomen during the era of the Mongol Empire, and
aristocratic robes and garments from the late nineteenth to early twentieth
centuries.
Commenting on the exhibition, Ch. Bayandelger, Head of the Research Center at the National Museum of Mongolia, said, “The exhibition presents a wide range of clothing and adornments with decorative patterns from the periods of the Hunnu, Turkic, Uighur, and the Middle Ages. Through this exhibition, we aim to demonstrate that traditional nomadic attire and adornments were not merely utilitarian objects but carried profound meanings related to customs, worldviews, religious beliefs, and symbolism. It also illustrates what kinds of clothing and adornments our ancestors used in ancient times and how these traditions have been preserved across generations, helping visitors understand the cultural continuity and resilience of Mongolian culture over thousands of years.”
The exhibition will be on display until February 2, 2026.
