IM Mungunzul Defeats Chinese Grandmaster Ju Wenjun

Ulaanbaatar, December 30, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2025 are being held in Doha, the State of Qatar, from December 25 to 30, 2025, bringing together the world’s elite chess players for the final major event of the year.


A total of 388 players are competing in the tournament, playing 13 rounds in rapid chess and 19 rounds in blitz chess. Representing Mongolia are Grandmasters Bilguun Sumiya and Munkhzul Turmunkh, International Masters Gan-Erdene Sugar and Mungunzul Bat-Erdene, FIDE Candidate Master Anand Tsogtbileg, and Candidate Master Bayasgalan Khishigbaatar.


Among the Mongolian participants, International Master Mungunzul Bat-Erdene has drawn attention. On December 27, 2025, she defeated five-time World Champion, world No. 4, and Chinese Grandmaster Ju Wenjun. After eight rounds, she stands ninth with six points.


In her first eight games, Mungunzul defeated India’s S. Dharia Parnali, World Champion Ju Wenjun of China, Uzbekistan’s Guldona Karimova, Kazakhstan’s Liyaa Kurmangaliyeva, and Serbia’s Teodara Injac. She drew with Russia’s Kateryna Lagno and China’s Lei Tingjie and lost to India’s Koneru Humpy.


In the overall standings, Grandmaster T. Munkhzul is ranked 38th, Candidate Master Kh. Bayasgalan 107th, International Master S. Gan-Erdene 72nd, Grandmaster S. Bilguun 159th, and Ts. Anand is 229th among the men’s competitors.
