Ulaanbaatar, January 21, 2026 /MONTSAME/. The National Climate Committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Gankhuyag Khassuuri, has convened to review and approve its work plan for 2026.

At the meeting, members discussed and endorsed the Committee’s 2026 action plan, reviewed efforts to strengthen intersectoral coordination under Mongolia’s national policy on climate change, and assessed the outcomes of policies and activities implemented in 2024–2025.

Officials from relevant sectors presented reports on the implementation of activities carried out in 2024–2025, as well as progress and future planning under the “Billions of Trees” national movement.

Under the initiative’s target of planting 1.5 billion trees, a total of 127.9 million trees have been planted to date, achieving 8.32 percent progress.

In addition, forest management planning was completed across 5.1 million hectares in Khuvsgul, Zavkhan, and Dornod aimags. Along the border areas with the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China, 1,166 km of firebreak strips were rehabilitated, and an additional 150 km were newly established.

To curb the spread of forest pests, control measures were carried out across 387,100 hectares in 75 soums of 13 aimags and in the green zones of Ulaanbaatar, protecting 1.3 billion trees. Furthermore, protective forest belts were established on 100 hectares in Arkhangai, Gobisumber, Uvurkhangai, and Khentii aimags, with 165,000 trees planted. To reduce desertification, land degradation, and sand movement, 264,000 trees were planted across 160 hectares in the Gobi and steppe regions.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister approved the National Climate Committee’s 2026 action plan and instructed that the Committee convene on a regular basis at least twice a year. He also directed that a report on the implementation of the plan be submitted to relevant authorities by December 15, 2026.
