Ulaanbaatar to Host Third Asian Permafrost Conference

Ulaanbaatar, January 30, 2026 /MONTSAME/. The Third Asian Permafrost Conference will be held in Ulaanbaatar from June 28 to July 2, 2026.
The conference, jointly organized by the Institute of Geography and Geoecology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences and the International Permafrost Association, will be held under the theme “Global Challenges Arising from Permafrost Thaw in Asia” and will be structured into 18 thematic sessions. According to the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, more than 360 scientists and researchers from 25 countries, including the United States, China, Russia, India, Japan, Canada, Norway, and Germany, have registered to participate.
Up to 20 of the best papers submitted by participants are planned to be published in Permafrost and Periglacial Processes, a geoscience journal focusing on earth surface cryogenic processes, landforms, and sediments present in (Sub) Arctic, Antarctic and High Mountain environments.
In connection
with the conference, international research teams will conduct field studies
along four routes in the Altai, Khangai, Khuvsgul, and Khentii mountain
regions.
The first Asian Conference on Permafrost was held in Lanzhou, China, in 2006 with more than 150 participants, while the second took place in Sapporo, Japan, in 2017 with about 170 participants.
