Ulaanbaatar, February 2, 2026 /MONTSAME/. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, in cooperation with international organizations and public and private sector partners, has launched the “Let’s Reduce Plastic Use” campaign ahead of COP17 to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
The initiative
calls on everyone to take part by reducing plastic waste at the source, sorting
waste, and promoting recycling.
Nationwide,
Mongolia generates about 2.2 million tons of waste annually, of which 1.4
million tons are produced in the capital, Ulaanbaatar. Currently, only 3–5
percent of total municipal waste nationwide—and 8.9 percent in Ulaanbaatar—is
recycled. Although nearly 50 percent of waste is recyclable, only about 6
percent of sorted plastic waste is actually recycled.
To reduce
waste generation, developing the habit of sorting waste and avoiding single-use
plastics are simple actions that everyone can take.
