Mongolian, Russian, and Buryat Hockey Players to Compete in Erdenet Ice Rink and on Lake Baikal

Ulaanbaatar, February 9, 2026 /MONTSAME/. In commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the historic joint space flight of the USSR and the Mongolian People’s Republic, which saw a Mongolian citizen travel to space, and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Erdenet City, the international hockey tournament titled the “Two Lakes Cup” will be organized.
The fourth edition of the tournament will open on February 25 and will continue on February 28 in Maksimikha village of the Republic of Buryatia, Russian Federation. The two-stage friendly competition will bring together the national teams of Mongolia and Buryatia, Russia, as well as the “Politek” team from Irkutsk Oblast. The teams will compete in a round-robin format, with the team securing the most victories lifting the championship trophy. The Organizing Committee is chaired by Gurragchaa Jugderdemid, Hero of Mongolia and the Soviet Union, and the first Mongolian cosmonaut.
Organizers emphasized that the “Two Lakes Cup” is not only a major sporting event uniting young athletes from the two countries, but also carries significant importance in promoting the international student sports movement.
