Ulaanbaatar, February 16, 2026 /MONTSAME/. Prime Minister Zandanshatar Gombojav visited the Darkhan Metallurgical Plant (DMP) JSC on February 13 to accelerate the establishment of a steel production complex.
The DMP plans to bring the Khust Mountain deposit, which has reserves of 12.6 million tonnes, into economic circulation to ensure a stable source of raw materials. The deposit is strategically important as it will supply the raw materials required for the integrated steel production complex project.
He tasked officials to finalize the project’s preliminary feasibility study, provide information to potential investors, and intensify the open selection process. He also instructed the authorities of Darkhan-Uul aimag to urgently place the land designated for the complex under special state protection. The project is expected to create 1,200 jobs.
The Government assigned the DMP to raise USD 117 million to increase foreign currency reserves. As of the annual performance report, the company earned USD 173.3 million. In addition, it produced 28.4 thousand tonnes of steel products and 2.4 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate, which means that exports increased by 2.3 times since 2024.
Prime Minister Zandanshatar said, “I would like to express my gratitude to the company’s team for exceeding the foreign currency reserve target and playing an important role in economic growth. Going forward, exploration and research activities need to be intensified to increase reserves. Furthermore, since the dispute surrounding the plant’s concession has been finally resolved by the Supreme Court, which ruled that the Government’s decision to terminate the agreement was lawful, there should be no obstacles to advancing the work.”
In 2025, the DMP planned to produce 33 thousand tons of steel products but achieved 33.6 thousand tonnes, reaching 102 percent of its target. Mining output increased by 1.3 million tonnes compared to 2024.
