Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The National Traumatology and Orthopedics Research Center has been honored with the ‘2018 Golisano Health Leadership Award’ by the Golisano Foundation.

The Mongolian Special Olympics Committee nominated the National Traumatology and Orthopedics Research Center for the award. Vice Chairwoman of the Mongolian Special Olympic Committee B.Altantsetseg presented the award to General Director of the NTORC T.Munkhsaikhan. The award is given health organizations in recognition of their contribution towards better and accessible health care, treatments and checkups.

Headquartered in Washington, DC, the Special Olympics is the largest organization for athletes with intellectual disabilities that provides their services to more than 5 million people in over 170 countries.

According to the foundation’s website, they state that the center’s doctors had believed that people with intellectual disabilities receive the same or better health care than others. FitFeet (podiatry) screening was introduced to Special Olympics Mongolia and its Healthy Athletes® program. 2 Clinical Directors were trained in Taipei, Taiwan in January 2018. The National Trauma and Orthopedic National Center of Mongolia made a significant contribution to inspire medical staff and doctors to give equal access to health for people with intellectual disabilities. A national training was held for 120 orthopedic surgeons to raise overall awareness about Special Olympics and its FitFeet/Healthy Athletes program. This has led to the secured access for people with ID for referral and follow up care.
