Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. As of October 28, around 95,000 tons of refined coal briquettes are stocked at different warehouse facilities around Ulaanbaatar city for the consumption, with cold season approaching. The coal briquettes are being sold to consumers through 483 sales points. In 2018, the government has estimated that annual consumption of refined coal briquette in Ulaanbaatar was 600,000 tons.

In addition to its existing coal briquette plant with annual capacity of 600,000 tons, ‘Tavan Tolgoi Fuel’ state-run company in charge of manufacturing of the refined coal briquette is currently building its second facility for 600,000-ton refined coal briquette in Nalaikh area in the eastern part of Ulaanbaatar city. It was reported in September that the new plant is to be put into full operation by November 2020.

Since March 2019, a ban has been imposed on the raw coal consumption in Ulaanbaatar city as an effort to tackle air pollution. As a substitute, the Tavan Tolgoi Fuel state-run company has been supplying the ‘refined’ or ‘smokeless’ coal briquette to Ulaanbaatar city Ger district residents. Thanks to this measure, it is estimated that air pollution in the capital city has been decreased  by more than half since 2019.

In September, Prime Minister of Mongolia U.Khurelsukh assured that the air pollution in the capital city will drop by more than 80 percent with the commissioning of the new plant.
