President Khurelsukh Receives Executive Secretary of UNCCD

At the invitation of President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Ibrahim Thiaw is visiting Mongolia. On May 21, 2024, President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa received the honorary guest, Executive Secretary Ibrahim Thiaw, and exchanged views on cooperation.
President Khurelsukh commended the Secretariat of the UNCCD for its active role in elevating the issues of environmental protection, combating desertification, and reducing land degradation to the forefront of global attention over the past 30 years since the adoption of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. The President underscored that Mongolia holds in high regard the valuable contribution of the Secretariat in ensuring the implementation of the Convention, consolidating the achievements, overcoming the challenges and difficulties, and strengthening the partnership and cooperation of the stakeholders.
Introducing Mongolia’s policies and measures to mitigate desertification and climate change, Head of State of Mongolia noted that preparations for hosting the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in 2026 are in full swing.
Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UNCCD, Ibrahim Thiaw, expressed gratitude to Mongolia for placing utmost importance on the global challenge of combating desertification and land degradation and proposing timely suggestions and initiatives.
Also, the Executive Secretary reaffirmed commitment to providing all-round support to Mongolia for hosting the COP17 to be held in Mongolia in 2026.
