Foreign Employment in Mongolia Rises by 6,000 Compared to 2024

Ulaanbaatar, October 20, 2025 /MONTSAME/. According to the National Statistics Committee, the number of employed foreign nationals in Mongolia increased by 6,000 in the third quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.


As of Q3 2025, a total of 23,800 foreign nationals from 103 countries are working in Mongolia under employment contracts, either for wages or as volunteers.


Demographics and Education

Gender distribution:

  • 21,900 men
  • 1,900 women

Age distribution:

  • The largest group is aged 35-39, totaling 4,200 individuals.
  • The smallest group is aged 20-20, with only 240 individuals.

Education levels:

  • 8,200 have technical or vocational education
  • 5,800 have completed secondary education
  • 5,300 hold bachelor’s or higher diplomas
  • 3,800 have specialized secondary education
  • 365 hold master’s or doctoral degrees
  • 264 have basic or primary education
  • 30 are uneducated

Country of Origin

  • 70.6% from China
  • 3.2% from Vietnam
  • 2.5% from the Philippines
  • 1.8% from Nepal
  • 1.4% from Russia
  • 1.3% from the United States
  • 0.9% from Indonesia
  • 6.2% from other countries

Employment Sectors

  • Foreign workers are employed across various industries:
  • 5,200 in mining and production
  • 4,800 in construction
  • 4,600 in manufacturing
  • 2,900 in wholesale and retail trade, and vehicle repair
  • 1,300 in electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning
  • 1,300 in education
  • 1,000 in international organizations and resident missions
  • 2,700 in other sectors

Compared to 2024, employment increased by:

  • 1,300 in manufacturing
  • 1,300 in construction
  • 1,200 in wholesale and retail trade and vehicle repair

Organizational Affiliation

  • 21,800 worked in limited liability companies
  • 284 in non-governmental organizations
  • 153 in budgetary organizations
  • 97 in state-owned enterprises
  • 62 in joint-stock companies
  • 1,400 in other organizations

Professions

  • 7,400 were technicians and assistants
  • 6,300 were production, construction, crafts, and service workers
  • 5,500 were specialists
  • 2,600 were operators and assemblers of equipment and machinery

Regional Distribution

  • 11,500 employed in the central region
  • 8,500 in Ulaanbaatar
  • 2,400 in the eastern region
  • 991 in the western region
  • 518 in the Khangai region

Among aimags:

  • Dornogobi employed 5,000
  • Umnugobi 3,100
  • Tuv 2,000
  • Dornond 1,000

 

Mongolian Citizens Working Abroad

In the same period, 206 Mongolian citizens were recruited to work abroad under labor contracts:

  • 176 to South Korea
  • 30 to Japan

Gender distribution:

  • 156 men
  • 50 women

Age distribution:

  • 32% were aged 25-29
  • 1% were under age 20

Education levels of recruited citizens:

  • 127 have high school diplomas
  • 64 hold bachelor’s degrees
  • 9 have specialized secondary diplomas
  • 5 have technical or vocational degrees
  • 1 holds a master’s and doctoral degree
