Law on Museum approved for the first time

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Bill on Museum was approved at the regular session of the Parliament on January 28 and the law creates favourable legal environment to conserve and safeguard cultural precious items, improve quality of museum services and increase social and economic benefits of museums.


Modern museum was first established in Mongolia in 1924 and there are 12 state owned and 24 local museums registered. Also there are 16 mini museums, exhibition halls at government organizations including the Bank of Mongolia, the General Authority for Border Protection and the Civil Aviation Authority and scientific organizations such as the Institutes of Archaeology and Paleontology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences and higher education institutes including the Mongolian University of Science and Technology and the National University of Medical Sciences. Besides, over 10 private museums and galleries are running permanent operations, including International Intellectual Museum, Danzanravjaa Museum, Museum of Mongolian Traditional  Medicine, Cultural Heritage Museum of Chinggis Khaan, Memorial Museum of the Victims of Political Repression, Mongol Costumes Museum and Tsagaandarium Museum. Moreover, Mongolia has 265 museums and exhibition halls in rural soums and districts of the capital city for local research and promotion.


The first law on museum defines legal framework of museum operations, eliminates duplication of laws and regulations and supports sustainable development of museum in line with relevant laws and regulations.


In addition, the newly approved law enables children to be served by the museum free of charge and museum staff, who work directly with museum exhibits to get bonus equal to one-year salary once in 8 years.
