MONTSAME National News Agency in cooperation with the Mongolian National Modern Gallery is presenting a series of Mongolian fine art masterpieces. This time, we are presenting the work ‘The Old Horse-head Fiddler’ by U.Yadamsuren which is listed in the rare and invaluable intangible cultural heritage category of Mongolia.

People’s Painter of Mongolia and State Prize Laureate Yadamsuren Urjin created ‘The Old Horse-Head Fiddler’ in 1958 combining European painting technique to create distance and Mongolian drawing technique.

It is said that the artist created the painting making a monk with long white beard as a living model. Moreover, some people also believe that Chinggis Khaan was represented by ‘the Old Horse-Head Fiddler’ since it was restrictive society.

The artist reflected Mongolians’ goods and clothes of that time in detail. For instance, one can see in the painting that the old horse-head fiddler is in red velvet sheepskin deel with dragon pattern and black sable wristband, having green silk belt and hanging Mongolian traditional knife set. Furthermore, the old horse fiddler with black sable hat and Mongolian boots with green embroidery, is sitting on a red carpet with Mongolian hammer pattern. The painting also depicted more details such as a gold ring in the old man’s finger and the Morin khuur with green body, decorated with ulzii and ugalz, Mongolian traditional patterns.

The painting displays how Mongolians honor their traditional culture and art as well as customs on a daily basis.
