Environment
Ulaanbaatar, July 31, 2025 /MONTSAME/. A joint study to determine the habitat range of the vulnerable snow leopard (Panthera uncia) was conducted by the Authorities of Khuvsgul National Park of Mongolia and Tunkinsky National Park of the Russian Federation on July 20-26, 2025.
The snow leopard remains one of the least studied felines and endures harsh environmental conditions. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species has categorized snow leopards as Vulnerable (VU).
In December 2024, the Authorities of Khuvsgul National Park and Tunkinsky National Park developed a Cooperation Plan titled “Monitoring and Research of the Vulnerable Snow Leopard in Transboundary Highland Regions.” Within this framework, a joint research expedition was conducted over a week in the Khuvsgul National Park of Mongolia, during which wildlife monitoring cameras installed in 2024 were inspected, and additional cameras were placed in key locations.
The study will proceed in Tunkinsky National Park of the Russian Federation, where the Mongolia-Russia Research Team is currently preparing for the next phase of the study.
