Ulaanbaatar, December 5, 2025 /MONTSAME/. During the State Visit of President of Mongolia, Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, to the Holy See, the Chinggis Khaan National Museum signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate with the Vatican Apostolic Library, also known as the Papal Secret Library.
According to the “Chinggis Khaan” National Museum, the Memorandum outlines cooperation between the two sides in four key areas:
- Exchanging scholars and specialists and, in particular, to
conduct research with a special focus on the history of the Mongol Empire;
- Share and study knowledge and information related to the
heritage of manuscripts, books, and documentary materials;
- Developing a bibliography, library science, archives, and
information technology systems;
- Organizing joint conferences and scientific meetings, and promoting collaborative research.
This cooperation will provide opportunities to study research materials, source documents, and rare archival records related to Mongolian history preserved in the Vatican Library. The exchange of scholars and experts is also expected to enhance the quality of academic research.
The partnership will create new possibilities for conducting studies based on historical documents connected to the Mongol Empire.
The Vatican Apostolic Library is one of the world’s oldest and most valuable libraries. It houses ancient manuscripts, rare books, archival materials, printed works, maps, coins, and medals with histories spanning millennia. Currently, the Library holds more than 1.6 million books and around 80,000 manuscripts, serving as invaluable sources on global religion, science, art, culture, and history.
Since its founding, the “Chinggis Khaan” National Museum has prioritized the registration, joint study, specialist training, and reproduction of documents and cultural artifacts related to Mongolian history preserved worldwide. The newly signed Memorandum marks another step in advancing that mission.
