Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ A scientific conference dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Public Referendum of 1945 of the People’s Republic of Mongolia (the former name) was held last Saturday. The anniversary is to be marked on October 20.

The opening speech was given by the Speaker of Parliament Z.Enkhbold. He said parliament considers the 1945 Public Referendum as the first democratic voting that had a great historic significance in the country’s independence.

During the early 1945’s, at the Yalta Conference, leaders of the allies of the World War II–the USA, the UK and the former Soviet Union--considered that the independence of the PR of Mongolia must be acknowledged by its neighbor, the Republic of China. In response, the latter’s authorities delivered a note on “considering of Mongolia’s independence on the basis of a public referendum”. Following the note, the deputies of the People’s Baga Khural (lower house of parliament of Mongolia) had issued a resolution on organizing a public poll on independence. On October 20 of 1945, 494 thous.960 people, or 98.5 of the population, participated in the referendum and backed the independence of their own country with 100 percent approval.

Thanks to the invincible efforts of the Mongolian people, China submitted a note on acknowledging the independence of the People’s Republic of Mongolia on January 12 of 1946.

In a scope of celebrating the 70th anniversary of the above event, the conference was hosted by the Institute of History and Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences, the National Archives, Mongolian National Museum of History and the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP).
