Mining Minister suspends granting of licenses

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Newly appointed Minister of Mining and Heavy Industry D.Sumiyabazar has issued an ordinance to temporarily suspend the granting of new mining licenses.
On October 23, the Minister met authorities of the Mineral Resources and Petroleum Authority to get au fait with functions of the governmental agency. During the meeting, the Mining Minister criticized the alleged license selling business in the mining sector, calling for demonstration of professionalism and fairness among government officials.
The Minister also handed over to B.Baatartsogt, Director of the Mineral Resources and Petroleum Authority, the ordinance, which aims to suspend the issuance of mining licenses until the country sorts out the existing laws and regulations.
“There is a necessity to systemize the effective laws and acts regulating the procedure on granting mining licenses in response to growing number of requests and complaints filed by entities and individuals regarding the selection procedure for special licenses and the online application process. Therefore, the Mineral Resources and Petroleum Authority is ordered to adjourn two documents – annex ‘Online issuance of application numbers’ adopted with the 2017 Cabinet Resolution No. 210 and ‘Selection Procedure on Issuance of Special Licenses’ approved on June 29, 2017 by the Minister of Mining and Heavy Industry, and report its actions to the Ministerial Council,” the ordinance reads.
