220th birth anniversary of oriental philosopher Agvaanbaldan celebrated

An international scientific conference took place on Friday at the Buddhist Institute of Mongolia dedicated to the 220th birth anniversary of an oriental philosopher Agvaanbaldan, known as Erdene Tungalag Tsorj.

 

A native of Khentii aimag, Agvaanbaldan was one of five famous Agvaan named scholars in Ikh Khuree or nowadays Ulaanbaatar city. A report on the anniversary celebration was given at the MONTSAME agency’s information center by the Administrative Office of Khentii aimag, the Local Council of the aimag’s Galshar soum, the International Association of Mongolian Studies (IAMS) and the Gandantegchilen Monastery.

 

Agvaanbaldan obtained the title of Kyabje (Gavj) in Tibet, and this title is now equivalent to an academician in Buddhism.

 

The conference aimed at inheriting Agvaanbaldan’s legacy to the next generation and to promote it to the public. Apart from works on Buddhist philosophy, Agvaanbaldan wrote 6 tomes consisting of 96 books. He was an author of major sutras, such as the Parchin Jiiden, which directs at boosting intelligence and competitiveness of lamas as well as the Duitseg on principles and virtues for Mongolian lamas. They are still used in Mongolian monasteries.  

 

Scholars and researchers of Mongolia, Russia, China, Germany, Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region of China, Russian Buryatia and Tuva Republics have participated  at the conference.
