EU and UNFAO works in Zavkhan and Khuvsgul aimag

EU and FAO joint team led by Traian Hristea, Ambassador of the European Union to Mongolia and Vinod Ahuja, Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UNFAO) successfully concludes a week long mission in Zavkhan and Khuvsgul aimag.  During the visit, the team met with local authorities, partners and beneficiaries to see the implementation of ongoing projects in the region. 

One of the main topic of discussion between local authority and visiting team have been creating more employment opportunities by supporting economic diversification, specifically in green and socially responsible industries based on local advantages and green economy. Local stakeholders have recognized the efficiency and successful implementation of the ongoing projects which are funded and implemented by EU-FAO and highlighted that they have been very much aligned with Development programmes of the region.

Ambassador Traian Hristea of the European Union to Mongolia and Vinod Ahuja, Representative of the FAO and their team is working  We have discussed about the projects that are being implemented in Khusvgul aimag, and ways forward for our cooperation in the future. I would like to highlight that we have successfully  implemented several highly efficient projects in the region. Many activities have been implemented specifically in meat, dairy and vegetable sector to improve the value chain production. Food and agriculture department at aimag level has benefitted through the project and capacity has been improved. Also, we will be providing all necessary support to sustainably continue and expand the good models of the projects 


EU funded –FAO implemented project “Support to Employment creation in Mongolia Component 2: Value Chains” is being implemented since 2016. The project aims to improve the competitiveness of meat, dairy, vegetable value chain and promote decent employment through promoting green development, and public and private partnership.


Approximately MNT 331 million assistance have been provided for Khuvsgul aimag through the project in 2019. To mention few interventions, the project is transferring Individual Quick Freezing -IQF technology to local stakeholder. The technology allows to keep the product’s  shape, colour, smell and taste, while maintaining nutritional content. This will allow the locals to enjoy fresh vegetable, fruits and berry all year around. 


Meat cooling storage has been provided for Shine Murun market, providing more safer meat for consumers. 


D. Batsaikhan, Governor of Zavkhan aimg 

In the framework of our goal to become consumer to producer aimag, EU have funded a project to establish production unit in each soums. Agriculture  sector is one of the economic pillar sector of our aimag. Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN is providing support and working closely together, especially in mitigating the risk burden on herders, we have also discussed collaboration in increasing sales of livestock based products, dairy, meat and vegetable products, thus opening export opportunities. 


Over 74 million tugriks worth of seed and storage support have been provided for red garlic growers in Zavkhan aimag. 


Number of technical trainings on dairy, meat and vegetable production and technology as well Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) have been organized for the producers and herders throughout the implementation of the project. The project is also being implemented in Darkhan-Uul, Selenge, Khovd, Tuv and Dornod aimags.
