Ulaanbaatar, August 14, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The revenue of Ulaanbaatar’s public transport sector has increased compared to previous years.

From July 31, 2024, to July 31, 2025, Ulaanbaatar’s public transport passenger numbers rose from 81.9 million to 91.2 million, while revenue increased from MNT 18.1 billion to 30.3 billion.

Thus, the number of people using public transport increased by 9.2 million, or 11.3 percent, and revenues rose by MNT 12.4 billion, or 68.4 percent, within a year. According to the Media and Public Relations Department of the Governor’s Office of the Capital City of Ulaanbaatar, this growth is attributed to the modernization of the public transport fleet.

Ulaanbaatar has imported 600 new buses into the public transport fleet, and drivers’ salaries have been increased to USD 1,000. In addition to delivering information to passengers by installing smart screens and providing free Wi-Fi on the buses, various electronic payment systems have been introduced. Passengers can now use their bank cards to pay for bus fares.

Bus card sales and charging kiosks have been installed at 100 locations across Ulaanbaatar city. Legal and regulatory reforms have been implemented in the public transport sector, and last spring, the city administration became a 79 percent shareholder of “Ulaanbaatar Smart Card” LLC. This acquisition has enabled enhanced control over public transport revenues and regulatory oversight.

In addition, the Law on Reducing Traffic Congestion in Ulaanbaatar, the Housing Program for Ger Districts, and regulations governing the Public Transport Development Fund have been approved. As part of the sector’s expansion, 31 small buses were imported and put into service in 2024, followed by 10 large buses in 2025.
