Mongolian Yokozuna Hoshoryu Wins Grand Sumo Tournament in London

Ulaanbaatar, October 20, 2025 /MONTSAME/. As part of the centennial celebrations of the Japan Sumo Association, the Grand Sumo Tournament was held in London, England, marking the first time in 34 years that a professional sumo event was held outside Japan. The five-day tournament took place at the Royal Albert Hall from October 15 to 19, 2025.
In
the final match, 74th Yokozuna Hoshoryu Tomokatsu, whose Mongolian name is Byambasuren
Sugarragchaa, faced 75th Yokozuna Onosato Daiki. Yokozuna Hoshoryu secured
victory, finishing the tournament with a 5-0 record.
The
tournament featured over 40 top-division rikishi (wrestlers), including six sumo
wrestlers from Mongolia: Sekiwake Kirishima B. Lkhagvasuren, Tamawashi B. Munkh-Orgil,
Onokatsu B. Choyjilsuren, Oshoma P. Delgerbayar, and Roga A. Amarsanaa. The
event was a cultural showcase, with sumo traditions like the dohyo-iri
(ring-entering ceremony) and shiko (ceremonial stomping) performed for the
audience.
The Grand Sumo Tournament in London was the first since 1991 and is part of the Japan Sumo Association's efforts to promote the sport. Plans are underway for a future tournament in Paris next June.
