Design Completed for 78.5-km New Bicycle Lanes to Be Built in 2026

Ulaanbaatar, November 5, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The Governor’s Office of the Capital City of Ulaanbaatar has announced plans to construct 253 kilometers of bicycle lanes across six districts of Ulaanbaatar between 2026 and 2028.


Detailed designs have been completed for 78.5 kilometers of lanes to be built in 2026. Of these, 15.17 km will be constructed in Sukhbaatar District, 3.6 km in Chingeltei, 28.23 km in Bayanzurkh, 18.74 km in Bayangol, 9.18 km in Khan-Uul, and 3.6 km in Songinokhairkhan. Currently, Ulaanbaatar has 101.7 km of bicycle lanes, and the total length is planned to reach 1,677 km by 2040 under the “20-Minute City” concept. The new lanes will be fully separated from motor traffic and integrated with green spaces.


In 2025, the Investment Department of the Capital City is overseeing 14 bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure projects covering 54.2 km and 205,414 square meters. Of these, 73,410 square meters have been completed, marking 41 percent progress. Additionally, Ulaanbaatar Road Repair and Maintenance is constructing bicycle and pedestrian paths over an area of 11,770 square meters this year.
