Construction of Wastewater Treatment Plant in Khunnu City Commences

/MONTSAME/. Comfort Impex LLC, the company selected to construct the wastewater
treatment plant for the Khunnu City project, and the Office of the Governor of
Khunnu City signed a cooperation agreement on November 5, 2025.
The project is being implemented
as part of efforts to decentralize Ulaanbaatar and promote balanced regional
development. Construction of Khunnu City’s infrastructure facilities is ongoing.
According to the Governor’s Office
of the Capital City of Ulaanbaatar, construction of the treatment plant with a daily
capacity of 3,000 cubic meters commences with funding from the 2025 city budget.
The facility will be capable of processing wastewater for a population of
20,000–25,000 people.
This year’s work will include site
preparation, building permits, equipment procurement, external electrical
installation, and fencing. The main construction phase will accelerate in 2026,
and the facility is planned to be commissioned by the end of 2027. In the long
term, a larger plant with a capacity of 20,000 cubic meters per day is planned.
On June 5, 2024, the State Great
Khural (Parliament) of Mongolia approved the Law on the Legal Status of Khunnu
City and a resolution to establish the city, designating a total area of 31,501.3
hectares. The new satellite city is envisioned to perform specialized functions
for the capital and feature efficient spatial planning.
Khunnu City is expected to become
home to 150,000 residents, create around 80,000 new jobs, and host universities,
a student campus, government and administrative complexes, and a unified
transport and logistics hub. The city is also planned to operate as an economic
free zone.
