Ulaanbaatar, December 10, 2025 /MONTSAME/. A high-level meeting on the sustainable management of the world’s rangelands, which cover half of the Earth’s land area, was held on December 9, 2025, during the 7th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7).
According to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Mongolia, the meeting aimed to contribute to the development of international strategies and policies that will be endorsed during the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (COP17), scheduled to take place in Ulaanbaatar from August 17–28, 2026.
The
meeting brought together high-level representatives from Mongolia, Kenya, Germany, and officials
from the Rio Conventions and the United Nations Environment Programme, who
shared their views on sustainable rangeland management.
During
the meeting, Minister of Environment and Climate
Change Batbaatar Bat emphasized, “About 70 percent of
Mongolia’s territory consists of vast steppe and grasslands. These ecosystems form
a complex system that absorbs carbon, regulates water systems, supports
biodiversity, and sustains traditional livestock herding, which underscores the
importance of our rangeland areas.” Minister Batbaatar also outlined how
Mongolia’s initiatives align with proposals to be advanced at COP17.
Delegates highlighted their anticipation of Mongolia hosting COP17 and expressed appreciation for the leadership of the Government of Mongolia.
