Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The fifth trilateral meeting of Mongolian President Kh.Battulga, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin was held in Bishkek on June 14. The meeting was chaired by President Kh.Battulga, who emphasized that the sustainable development of bilateral cooperation between the three countries forms favorable conditions for the development of trilateral cooperation.

In his opening speech, President noted that deepening good-neighborly friendly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation with China and Russia is the priority of Mongolian foreign policy. He also expressed content with the rapid development of cooperation with Russia and China on strategic partnership level, in all areas of social relations.

“Within the framework of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and China, I paid a state visit to China and attended the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation last April. I also hope that the upcoming visit of President Vladimir Putin to Mongolia and joint celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Khalkhin Gol Battle will be successful.

With the result of joint efforts, trilateral cooperation mechanism has been established and legal basis has been strengthened in recent years alongside expansion of cooperation and certain advancements in some sectors. Remarkable progress in transit transportation, with over 500 percent increase of freight trains that passed through Mongolian territory to Russia and Europe between 2016 and 2018, is a clear example of the effectiveness of three-party coordination.

However, you may agree that the progress and development of the trilateral cooperation is not sufficient. In the three years since the commencement of the Program on Establishing Economic Corridor, no specific project that will contribute to the economic development of the three countries has been implemented. Therefore, it is necessary to provide specific instructions for intensification of trilateral cooperation to the relevant authorities of the three countries. In particular, I would like to share some creative ideas with you on how to accelerate the implementation of priority projects within the Economic Corridor Establishment Program,” President noted.

He also expressed willingness to create a joint working group on feasibility study of the Gas Pipeline Project, which is on talk for many years, and proposed to establish a multilateral organization for the Northeast Asia Regional Power Interconnection.

In their speeches, President Vladimir Putin and President Xi Jinping expressed willingness to cooperate in energy sector. President Vladimir Putin also demonstrated interest in modernizing Ulaanbaatar railway and increasing the capacity of transit transportation. President Xi Jinping also emphasized the importance of development of economic corridor between the countries, noting that the railway project is a priority.
