Ulaanbaatar, April 25, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The last week of April each year is designated as World Immunization Week. This year, the Week is celebrated under the theme “Everyone Can Get Immunized.”

World Immunization Week aims to increase access to vaccines and protect children, adolescents, and adults from vaccine-preventable diseases. The Ministry of Health of Mongolia, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations Children's Fund are working together to raise awareness about the importance of immunization and the health risks associated with not getting vaccinated.

Head of the Immunization Department of the National Center for Communicable Diseases O. Dashpagam said, “The global immunization program has been implemented since 1974 and has prevented 154 million deaths. Particularly, 94 million people have been prevented from dying from measles. Protecting children under the age of five means securing their well-being, as it protects them against infectious diseases that can cause serious illness and disability or be fatal.

Out of the 190 countries that have introduced the hepatitis B vaccine into their national immunization schedules, 117 states have immunized newborns within 24 hours of life.

In 2023, 83 percent of children received the first dose of the measles vaccine, and 74 percent received the second dose. As of February this year, 146 countries have introduced the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine into their national immunization schedules. Studies show that immunization has a positive effect on population growth.” By 2023, the global coverage for the first dose of the HPV vaccine is estimated at 62 percent, 70 percent in the WHO Western Pacific Region, and 40 percent in Mongolia. In our country, Arkhangai aimag has the highest coverage rate at 54 percent.

In the past 50 years, vaccines have saved 154 million lives. Of these, 146 million are under the age of five, including 101 million children under one year old.
