Ulaanbaatar, May 14, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The Launch Ceremony of the construction of the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod Cross-Border Railway took place on May 14, 2025.

This will be the second cross-border railway to be built after the Zamyn-Uud-Ereen railways established under the 1955 Agreement between Mongolia and the People's Republic of China.  The Government of Mongolia and the Government of the People's Republic of China signed the Agreement on Establishing the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod Cross-Border Railway on February 14, 2025, and the construction of the cross-border railway is commencing three months later, on May 14, 2025.

This cross-border railway is expected to increase Mongolia's coal exports to 165 million tons and revenue by USD 1.5 billion annually. The Agreement, which was initially discussed in 2004, with negotiations starting in 2008, is now being put into tangible action.

Prime Minister of Mongolia Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai delivered a speech during the Launch Ceremony, stating, “A new era of rapid development in the economic partnership between Mongolia and China has emerged. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Government and people of the People's Republic of China for the grant in implementing the expansion and modernization of the Gashuunsukhait Port, which is also being inaugurated today. The expansion of the Gashuunsukhait Border Port with 22 export and import gates doubles its throughput capacity, and will not only have a positive impact on Mongolia's economy and foreign trade, but also provide possibilities to increase employment and income for local residents, making it beneficial for the local community.”

The Launching Ceremony was attended by Members of the State Great Khural (Parliament) and Government of Mongolia, representatives of the Government of the People's Republic of China, the Secretary of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Regional Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Mongolia, the Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission of China, the Chairman of the Board of Directors for China Energy Group, and representatives of the contractor companies of the two countries.
