UNFPA distributes sanitary kits for rural women
SocietyUlaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) received aid of sanitary and hygiene packages from the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) for ensuring a safety of girls and women in the dzud-struck regions of Mongolia, on February 16.
According to the date provided by the National Emergency Commission, 90 soums of 20 aimags have been struck by the so-called white dzud. Each of the UNFPA sanitary kits includes a whistle, a flashlight, toothpaste, a toothbrush and sanitary pads. This action has been estimated at 12,070 USD.
Due to the extremely dry summer of the last year, hay-making was insufficient, plus, heavy rains and snow during autumn caused serious temperature drop, which resulted in ground temperature of -50 Celsius in some regions.
“It is necessary to ensure minimum standard of hygiene of girls and women in the expectedly worsening situations, in order to protect their health and dignity”, said Naomi Kitahara, the country manager of the UNFPA for Mongolia.
