Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/ ‘Healthy teeth-healthy children’ national program was approved during the Cabinet meeting on August 15. With funding of MNT37 billion, the program will be implemented in 2018-2022.

The program aims at reducing dental caries by 30 percent and the mean number of decayed, missed and filled teeth (DMFT mean) by 4 points by means of improving sufficiency and quality of children’s oral health service, ensuring financial stability and expanding inter-sector cooperation.

In recent years, the prevalence of dental caries is increasing among children. According to the national program on oral health in 2011, the caries prevalence in 5-6 years olds was at 87-96 percent, in 12 years olds at 65.3 percent, and 67.5 percent for 18-year olds. Professionals deem that the caries prevalence has increased more. For instance, dental examination found that 91 percent of 816,941 children under 18 suffered caries according to 2012 survey. Presently, there are over 725,600 children aged 2-12 throughout the nation.

Statistics say that there are 1049 dentists working nationwide, of whom 77 percent or 817 dentists are working in private hospitals.

According to the national program, it plans to take comprehensive measures to open specialized dental wards at primary health care centers, health center of soums, inter-soum hospitals, central hospital of aimags and districts and regional diagnostic-treatment centers, improve distribution of dental treatment devices, and render free or discounted tariff services to children aged 2-16 at both of public and private hospitals within the health insurance system.
