Ulaanbaatar, August 1, 2025 /MONTSAME/. Construction of the new Central Wastewater Treatment Plant in Ulaanbaatar, launched in 2020, has reached a key milestone, with the facility receiving its first trial inflow during the Naadam Festival period in July 2025.

Full commissioning is scheduled for October 2025, at which point operations of the existing treatment plant will be discontinued. After a year-long testing and stabilization phase, the facility will be formally handed over to the State Commission.

“Designed to meet modern environmental standards, the new plant has a daily treatment capacity of 250,000 cubic meters of domestic and pretreated industrial wastewater.

The facility operates based on two core technologies: wastewater purification and sludge processing. This will significantly reduce odors commonly associated with the previous plant. Since 2023, operational personnel have been continuously trained in cities across the People’s Republic of China to ensure effective management and maintenance.

The current Central Wastewater Treatment Plant, commissioned in 1964, was originally designed to handle 160,000–170,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day. However, it now receives approximately 210,000 cubic meters on average, and up to 240,000 cubic meters during the summer months—well beyond its intended capacity.
