World qualifier in UB gives Olympic tickets to 48 wrestlers to Rio

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The “First last chance” 2016 World Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament 1 took place this April 22-24 at the “Buyant-Ukhaa” sports complex, Ulaanbaatar.

The gathered for the events some 600 wrestlers from 80 countries competed in men’s Greco-Roman, men’s and women’s freestyle. On the first day, competitions for men’s Greco-Roman in under 59, 66, 75, 85, 98 and above 130 kg were held with 151 wrestlers from 51 countries, after which men and women’s freestyle wrestling contests ran.

According to overall results, Hungary claimed four Olympic quotas; Armenia, China, Turkey, USA and Uzbekistan--three quotas each; Belarus, Georgia, Moldavia, Poland, Romania, Sweden and Venezuela--two quotas each; other 15 countries--one quota each.

Romania, Bahrein, Turkey, USA, Armenia, China, South Korea, Hungary, Belarus, North Korea, Iran, Ecuador, Israel and France won at least one gold medal.

Three Mongolians competed in the men’s -97, women’s -48 and -75kg categories, but did not win the Olympic ticket. There is a second chance for Mongolia to grab quotas at the second qualification tournament for wrestling that will take place this May 6-8 in Istanbul of Turkey.
