Price of Consumer Goods and Food Increases 9.8 Percent

Ulaanbaatar, May 15, 2025 / MONTSAME/. Prices of consumer goods and services nationwide in April 2025 were 8.6 percent higher compared to the same period of 2024.

The food prices increased by 6.8 percent, non‑food goods by 9.4 percent, other goods by 6 percent, and services by 17 percent. The price of meat and meat products rose by 13.7 percent compared with the same period of 2024, with the price of beef increasing by 13.2 percent, horse meat by 2.5 percent, and sheep and goat meat by 17.1 percent.

The 3.9 percent rise in the price of bread, flour, and rice was driven by the increase in the price of bread and bakery products by 5.9 percent, and noodles by 19.3 percent.

In Ulaanbaatar, prices of consumer goods and services rose by 9.8 percent compared with the same period of 2024. Urban inflation was affected by the prices of imported goods, excluding gasoline and fuel, by 2.6 percentage points, and domestic goods, excluding meat and solid fuel, by 6.1 percentage points.

The average retail price of one kilogram of boneless beef in April 2025 was MNT 22,929. This is 21.7 percent higher than in April 2023 and 14.1 percent higher than in April 2024.

The average price of first‑grade flour in April 2025 was MNT 2,229. This is 1 percent lower than in April 2023 and 9.1 percent lower than in April 2024.

The average price of one liter of AI‑92 petroleum in April 2025 was MNT 2,390, unchanged since April 2023.

National inflation was influenced by the prices of imported goods, excluding gasoline and fuel, by 2.6 percentage points, and domestic goods, excluding meat and solid fuel, by 5 percentage points. The inflation rate was 5.7 percent in April 2024. In April 2025, it was 8.6 percent, with the pace of increase 2.9 percentage points higher than the same period of the previous year.

In the Western region, the price of goods groups rose by 6.9 percent; in the Central region, the food group by 7.9 percent; in Ulaanbaatar, the services group by 18.4 percent and the non‑food group by 10.9 percent, representing the largest increases.

In every aimag, the consumer prices of goods and services increased by 4.0 to 15.3 percent compared with the same period of 2024. The smallest rise was in Bulgan aimag at 4 percent, and the largest in Khovd aimag at 15.3 percent.

To improve representativeness and accuracy, the consumer basket and its weights are revised once every three years.

In Ulaanbaatar, the consumer basket is composed of 418 goods and services, while the consumer basket consists of 333 items in the aimags. Weights are calculated using the results of the 2023 Household Socio‑Economic Survey, and from February 2025, prices are disseminated using the 2023 average price base.
