Ulaanbaatar, March 14, 2024. /MONTSAME/. The construction and commissioning of a new building for the National Library of Mongolia, a key target in the Mongolian Government's 2020-2024 action plan, has been accomplished. Mongolians are ready to receive a state-of-the-art National Library that meets international standards.

Founded in 1921, the National Library of Mongolia has remained a cornerstone of scholarship in Mongolia ever since. Originally housed in a building measuring 4560 square meters, the library's collection has grown significantly over the years. Today, it shares over 3.5 million books and publications, a sevenfold increase from its initial collection. Unfortunately, the outstanding growth has come at a cost. The library's current capacity is far exceeded by the size and volume of its collection. This overcapacity causes a significant challenge, potentially limiting accessibility, hindering preservation efforts, and jeopardizing the library's ability to serve its vital role.

The National Library's former building will house a consolidated collection focusing on manuscripts, block-printed books, Mongol studies, and archival materials. This building will function as a Documentary Heritage Research and Information Center, offering both traditional and electronic research services. The old library will serve as the basis for the Mongol Studies Center by preserving and restoring the cultural heritage of literature of the Mongols. It will also facilitate the dissemination, study, research, and circulation of the national literary and cultural heritage.

A cultural monument with a distinctive classical design, the old National Library building is ideally suited to become a multifaceted cultural facility. By adhering to international norms and standards, this historic structure can be restored, preserved, and protected, allowing for the dissemination, study, and appreciation of the unique building design and valuable national literary treasures housed within.

The National Library is undergoing a comprehensive relocation process to its new building. It includes the standardized transportation and placement of books and publications, furniture and equipment installation, and the implementation of robust risk control measures and environmental analysis throughout the move.

The transition to the new library building will offer several exciting opportunities. Citizens will benefit from expanded access to services, fostering a vibrant space for the cultural and creative production of books and printed materials. The library's activities will flourish, transforming it into a hub of enlightenment. Here, citizens can deepen their scientific and cognitive understanding, readily access information, pursue personal growth and development, and productively engage in leisure activities.
