Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Mongolian 3x3 basketball team which claimed a gold medal at the 3rd Asian University 3x3 Basketball Championship in Malaysia returned home on April 17. The champions were warmly welcomed by the gathered crowd of family members, friends, basketball fans and representatives of Mongolian
National Basketball Association (MNBA) at the Chinggis Khaan international airport.
Our players defeated team China in the finals by 17:13 to win the championship. Coached by MNBA Secretary General, former basketball player S.Tulga, team Mongolia was made of captain B.Batzolboo, B.Naranbaatar, O.Enkhbaatar and A.Sukhbat.
The jubilant coach said, “Mongolia is seeing historic success in 3x3 basketball, and we’ve shown that team sport can develop in Mongolia too”. Mongolia took a silver medal from the Asian University 3x3 Basketball Championship in 2015, and according to S.Tulga, the team went to Malaysia this year ‘to change the color of the medal’ which they did.
By making it to the finals, the Mongolian team became eligible to compete in the 3x3 Basketball World University League alongside the Chinese team.
Captain B.Batzolboo shared his feelings at the airport saying, “We aimed to upgrade the color of the silver medal from 2015, and I am happy that we fulfilled our goal. The match with Indonesia was the hardest”. Interestingly in their first match into the championship, team Mongolia lost to the B team of China, the same team they defeated in the finals.
