Ulaanbaatar, June 25, 2025 /MONTSAME/. On June 24, 2025, Secretary General of the State Great Khural (Parliament) of Mongolia Mr. Baasandorj Barsuren received the delegation led by Gender Partnership Programme Officer of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Ms. Mariana Duarte. The two sides exchanged views on the outcomes of the meeting-discussion on "Strengthening Parliamentary Engagement in United Nations Human Rights Mechanisms," jointly organized by the State Great Khural and the IPU, and discussed prospects for further cooperation.

Since Mongolia became a member of the IPU in 1962, the two sides commenced a new phase of cooperation by establishing a Memorandum of Understanding in 2022, aiming at strengthening parliamentary democracy and ensuring human rights and gender equality in parliamentary operations.

At the beginning of the meeting, Secretary General of the Parliament of Mongolia Baasandorj Barsuren extended his greetings on the 136th anniversary of the founding of the IPU and the International Day of Parliamentarism on behalf of himself and the staff of the Secretariat of the State Great Khural. The Secretary General emphasized that the two-day event that they co-organized took place under a theme of significance to the implementation of the 2024-2028 strategic plan of the State Great Khural, which aims to refine the people-centered ideology that honors human rights and freedoms.

Mr. Baasandorj Barsuren further noted that the discussions on the following two independent matters within the topic of "Strengthening Parliamentary Engagement in United Nations Human Rights Mechanisms" were explored within four sessions: the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Human Rights Council and the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and that the discussions on the role and involvement of the Parliament were highly fruitful.

Ms. Mariana Duarte expressed her gratitude to the Secretariat of the State Great Khural for providing thorough preparation and multilateral participation in the meeting. Commending the Parliament’s efforts, political leadership, and initiative in cooperating with IPU on human rights issues, the Programme Officer expressed readiness to support the implementation of the Parliament’s 2024-2028 strategic plan within the framework of future cooperation.

Secretary General Baasandorj Barsuren extended his gratitude to the Secretary General of the IPU, Mr. Martin Chungong, for his message commending the tangible endeavors made by the State Great Khural of Mongolia toward cultivating human rights, gender equality, and parliamentary values. Additionally, the Secretary General requested the delegation to convey an invitation to Mr. Martin Chungong to visit Mongolia this fall on the occasion of the upcoming 35th anniversary of the establishment of a permanent Parliament in Mongolia, reported the Media and Public Relations Department of the State Great Khural.
