International Delegates Meet in Dalanzadgad Ahead of COP17

October 7, 2025 /MONTSAME/. Oyu Tolgoi LLC is organizing the international
scientific conference “Combating Desertification: A Green Future” for the third
consecutive year, within the framework of the “100 Million Trees for the
Future” program, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate
Change and the Governor’s Office of Umnugobi aimag.
The
conference was organized in Dalanzadgad soum, Umnugobi aimag, jointly by the Information
and Research Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology, and Environment, and the Institute
of Geography and Geoecology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, on October 3,
2025.
The event
aimed to jointly seek tangible solutions to combat desertification ahead of the
17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations
Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which will be hosted by Mongolia in
2026. The conference was attended by more than 200 representatives from
countries including Mongolia, the Commonwealth of Australia, the People’s
Republic of China, Japan, and the French Republic, who discussed solutions for desertification,
land degradation, sustainable use and restoration of water resources, and
climate change adaptation.
A total
of 27 presentations were delivered at the main and sub-sessions, including the latest
research results and solutions from foreign and domestic scientists. These
included topics such as the scientific basis of desertification, water resource
engineering solutions, satellite and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based
monitoring methods, sustainable pasture management, and climate change risk-reducing
technologies.
During the
conference, representatives participated in the “Unlocking Opportunities”
meeting and the “Achieving Land Degradation Neutrality” training, which were held
to strengthen international cooperation and promote joint actions against
desertification and land degradation. Additionally, over 40 presentations and
exhibitions of organizations were displayed on the walls, fostering the exchange
of experiences and strengthening cooperation.
Organizing
the conference regularly at the international level and establishing it as a
platform for long-term cooperation among professional organizations and
researchers to validate findings and share solutions to combat desertification
is part of Oyu Tolgoi LLC’s long-term environmental policy under its “100 Million
Trees for the Future” program.
Minister
of Environment and Climate Change Batbaatar Bat, Members of Parliament Seddorj
Renchinbyamba and Munkhbayasgalan Luvsanbyambaa, Governor of Umnugobi aimag
Enkhbat Nasanbuyan, Chairman of Citizens’ Representatives Khural of Umnugobi
aimag Erdene-Ornokh Oyun, Oyu Tolgoi’s General Manager for Health, Safety,
Environment, and Social, Philip Abraham, delivered remarks.
