Ulaanbaatar, November 12, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Mongolia and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have jointly launched the “Empowering Girls” and “Building Health and Sanitation Friendly Schools” initiatives in three schools located in Sukhbaatar, Altanbulag, and Bayangol soums of Selenge aimag. These programs will be implemented three years to improve access to health education and hygiene standards for students.
A delegation led by Shen Minjuan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China, and Khalid Sharifi, Head of UNFPA Mongolia, visited Selenge aimag on November 11, 2025, and met with the aimag’s Governor and regional authorities to discuss ongoing efforts and future areas of cooperation.
As part of its broader commitment to youth engagement, UNFPA has established and launched a Youth Development Center in Mandal soum. During the visit, UNFPA representatives expressed plans to expand the initiative to additional soums across the region.
As a gesture of goodwill toward educational progress, Ambassador Shen Minjuan awarded MNT 500,000 scholarships to 30 senior-year students at three schools in Selenge aimag. The initiative marks the launch of the “Ambassador’s Scholarship” program, which is expected to continue in the years ahead, supporting academic achievement and youth development in the region.
The meeting also included a review of the ongoing construction of the 210 megawatt (MW) coal-fired thermal power plant in Sukhbaatar soum, the administrative center of Selenge aimag. This strategic infrastructure project is likely to enhance the regional energy capacity and long-term development.
The Embassy of China reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation between China and Mongolia and expressed its readiness to collaborate with Selenge aimag across a wide range of sectors – including education, healthcare, tourism, infrastructure development, specialist training, and the establishment of a Chinese language center. This initiative paves the way for expanded and inclusive partnerships between China and Selenge aimag.
