Ulaanbaatar, May 12, 2023 /MONTSAME/. The relationship between Mongolia and Germany has been thriving for 68 years, with Germany being Mongolia's most active partner among European countries. One of the fields that has seen a long history of collaboration is biology, which is being testified by the current celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Mongolian-German biological expedition.
In 2013, a joint academic conference was held at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Germany, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the expedition, while in 2017, the National University of Mongolia and Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg jointly organized an academic conference in Mongolia.
On the occasion of the anniversary, a Photography Exhibition is displayed at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mongolia. Each photograph on display represents the tireless efforts and hard work of biologists from both countries in Mongolia since the first joint expedition undertaken by the Academies of Science of Germany and Mongolia in June 1962.
Comparing photos from the 20th century to those taken in the 21st century is an intriguing and captivating experience for visitors. The photographs captured during the research on Mongolia's biodiversity are very informative for visitors to grasp how climate change has impacted the flora and fauna of Mongolia.
Present at the opening ceremony of the exhibition were esteemed guests, including Jorn Rosenberg, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to Mongolia, Michael Rossbach, the First Secretary at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mongolia, R. Samiya (Ph.D.), the Consulting Professor at the National University of Mongolia, Willi Xylander, the Director of the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History in Görlitz, and Dr. Karsten Wesche, a renowned botanist with 20 years of experience working in Mongolia.
"Today's exhibition at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany is an exceptional showcase of the longstanding and fruitful cooperation between Mongolia and Germany in the field of biology, spanning 60 years. Each photograph on display captures moments of the joint expedition, with the latest in 2022. The exhibition offers visitors to glimpse into the life of the expedition team at that time, providing a window into the work and achievements of the partnership. Moreover, these photographs serve as a testament to the continued growth of German-Mongolian relations and cooperation, even after the Mongolian political system change in the 1990s," said Michael Rossbach during his speech.
R. Samiya said, “This exhibition is unique in showcasing the significant progress and change that has taken place over the past 60 years. As one who has witnessed more than 40 years of this partnership, I am delighted to see this history in photos."
The cooperation between Mongolia and Germany has been continuously developing, covering various fields.
