Before the Basho began, the Yokozuna Deliberation Council was closely watching Terunofuji. The Council commended him for demonstrating the qualities of an outstanding champion at the Nagoya Basho, as he had been unable to fully participate in two consecutive Basho due to injury. He remained undefeated for the first ten days of the Nagoya Basho. At the end of the Basho, he secured victory by defeating Takanosho in an extra bout, despite having fallen three times.

Terunofuji, who finished with 12 wins and three losses, said, "What I have to do will not change. The most important thing is to do my best. I'm glad I was prepared enough to win. I've been in this situation many times, so it's no problem. I've never won in Nagoya before, so I'm happy to win for the first time. I want to show good results to my supporters who have been with me for many years. I'm happy to have shown my best wrestling and won.”
