UN Adopts “Literacy for Life: Shaping Future Agendas” Resolution Initiated by Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar, November 12, 2024 /MONTSAME/. At the initiative of Mongolia, the “Literacy for Life: Shaping Future Agendas” resolution was adopted at the Third Committee of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on November 11, 2024.


This time, the resolution was updated with emphasis on recovery from the learning loss in literacy education in recent years due to the pandemic, and that literacy is an integral part of lifelong education and skills that develop and change in different conditions of work and life. The resolution recognized the crucial role of teachers and trainers in imparting equal and quality education, knowledge, and skills, including digital skills, to everyone.

 

The resolution also recalled the promise to boost scholarships available to the people of developing countries, for enrolment in higher education including vocational training, information and communications technology, technical, engineering, and scientific programs. Further, it called upon the Member States to raise investment in improving access to equal and high-quality education for all, including the skills to work in traditional as well as online environments. The resolution also highlighted the importance of transferring knowledge and skills between the present and future generations as stated in the Pact of the Future.


According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia, 125 countries representing all regions of the world have joined as co-authors of the resolution “Literacy for Life: Shaping Future Agendas.”
