The 13th GTI Transport Board Meeting Convenes in Ulaanbaatar
EconomyUlaanbaatar, November 14, 2024 /MONTSAME/. The 13th Greater Tumen Initiative (GTI) Transport Board Meeting was held on November 14, 2024, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia. Representatives of the transport sectors of Mongolia, the People’s Republic of China, the Russian Federation, and the Republic of Korea exchanged views and shared experiences to expand and develop cooperation.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the outcomes of the projects implemented in the transport sector and their plans for future work under the themes of "Progress of Activities in the Transport Sector of the Greater Tumen Initiative," "Outcomes and Recommendations of the 4th ESCAP-GTI Seminar," and "Proposed Projects and Activities for 2024-2025." In addition, they presented the progress of ongoing projects and programs in the road and transport sector.
The GTI, an intergovernmental cooperation mechanism established in 1995 with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is the foundation for economic cooperation among Mongolia, China, Russia, and South Korea. Committing to the vision of building a great partnership for common prosperity between neighbors, the GTI has become an effective platform for regional economic cooperation, expanding policy dialogue, improving business environments, and contributing to peace and stability in NEA. In 2009, during the 10th Meeting of the GTI Consultative Commission in Ulaanbaatar, a Transport Committee was established. The Committee aims at creating a unified regional transport network by developing regional transport corridors, increasing connectivity within the region, and boosting cargo transportation in Northeast Asia.
The Greater Tumen Initiative annually updates its Regional Transport Strategy and Action Plan. The GTI views these documents as concrete steps toward creating a unified transportation network within the region and introducing affordable, efficient transportation services.
Last year, a GTI Meeting in China brought together around 30 representatives from member states and partner organizations. During the meeting, the Strategic Action Plan for 2023-2024 outlined plans for Mongolia to rehabilitate the Choibalsan-Ereentsav railway, develop the Ulaanbaatar-Undurkhaan-Baruun Urt-Bichigt highway, and the Sainshand-Baruun Urt-Huut-Bichigt railway, and to export coal from Mongolia's eastern region to the Northeast Asian market.
