Prime Minister of Mongolia Addresses One Water Summit

Riyadh, December 4, 2024 /MONTSAME/. Prime Minister of Mongolia Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai participated in the One Water Summit, which was held on December 3, 2024, in the margin of the 16th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 16) in Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia.


The Summit is part of the “One World” initiative launched by President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron in 2017, and this time the summit is jointly organized by France, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, and the World Bank. Heads of State and Government, ministers responsible for water issues from about 10 countries, and more than 400 representatives of international and non-governmental organizations are attending the high-level meeting.



Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman, President of France Emmanuel Macron, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Prime Minister of Mongolia  Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai, and World Bank President Ajay Banga addressed the Water Summit. The summit discussed a wide range of water-related issues, including international cooperation on transboundary water and freshwater ecosystems, technical solutions for water use, nature-based solutions, innovation, technology, and opportunities to bridge the financing gap in the water and sanitation sectors.


As a country that has joined the 30 by 30 Initiative, which unites 120 member states, the participation of Mongolia in this high-level meeting and raising its voice at the major global event on water is crucial.



In his speech, Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene expressed Mongolia’s commitment to developing responsible mining and improving water supply in the desert and Gobi regions in cooperation with mining partners. The Premier also briefly presented the policies and activities implemented at the national level to reduce the impact of desertification on the agricultural sector, mentioning major projects and activities such as the “One Soum-One Lake” or “333 Lakes” program and the “Billion Trees” National Movement.


Noting the country’s intention to host the 17th Conference of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in 2026 under the theme "One for All, All for One," the Prime Minister of Mongolia stated its readiness to work more actively with partners around the world on water security and proper management of water resources.
