Society
Bayan-Ulgii /MONTSAME/ Police officers of Bayan-Ulgii aimag have revealed and are investigating an attempt to smuggle numerous heads of Dalmatian pelican through the Tsagaannuur border crossing.
According to senior inspector in charge of public relations of Police department of Bayan-Ulgii aimag J.Jaganolat, during the investigation, it was confirmed that the illegal act was conducted by C, a citizen of Khovd soum of Uvs aimag, and citizens, A and C, from Ulgii soum of Bayan-Ulgii aimag.
The Dalmatian Pelican is listed in the "Red Book" of Mongolia as well as in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Until the 1960s and 1970s, Dalmatian Pelicans were rather common in western Mongolia, with several hundred pairs breeding in the region’s large lakes and wetland areas. In the early 1970s the population started to decline mostly because of habitat degradation and, in particular, shooting, because the upper mandible is a much-favored material for sweat blades for horses.
A beak of Dalmatian pelican costs MNT500.000-800.000 in a black market.
